Our Story

For more than 36 years, José’s Mexican Food has been built on faith, sacrifice, hard work, and a deep commitment to serving people well. What began in 1989 as one family restaurant grew into five José’s Mexican Food locations across the Inland Empire, but the heart behind it has never changed: serve fresh, quality Mexican food, care for people, and treat every guest like family.

For over 30 years, José’s has been proud to serve Moreno Valley from its location at Pigeon Pass Road and Ironwood Avenue. Over those decades, this restaurant has become part of the life of the community. Families have gathered here after games, after church, after long workdays, and for everyday meals that became lasting memories. Generations have walked through these doors, and many guests who first came years ago now return with their children and grandchildren.

José’s was never built by one family alone. It was built side by side with an extraordinary team. Some team members have been with José’s for more than 30 years. Others have given 20 years, 10 years, and many meaningful years in between. Their loyalty, care, and hard work helped shape not only this restaurant, but the spirit behind it. They did not simply work at José’s. They helped build José’s.

That is why this moment is so painful.

Today, José’s Moreno Valley location is facing a serious challenge. José’s holds a binding lease with options through 2040 and remains in legal possession of the property while the matter is under appellate review. This is not a situation where José’s failed to pay rent or walked away from its responsibilities. Instead, José’s believes it has been under increasing pressure through ongoing disputes, costly litigation, and now a public hearing tied to a redevelopment proposal that would replace this long-standing local restaurant with another McDonald’s.

For José’s, this has never been only about property. It is about people. It is about the team members who have spent years, and in some cases decades, building their lives here. It is about the guests who made José’s part of birthdays, family dinners, lunch breaks, and everyday routines. It is about a Moreno Valley business that has served this city faithfully for over 30 years and has tried to do things the right way.

This is about more than one restaurant. It is about whether a long-standing local business, built by family and loyal team members, and supported by generations of guests, should be pushed aside to make way for another chain restaurant.

José’s is respectfully asking the City to pause this process until the courts finish resolving the legal dispute. If the hearing continues, José’s humbly asks its guests, neighbors, friends, and supporters to stand with this restaurant, this family, and this team.

For decades, José’s has joyfully served Moreno Valley.
Now, José’s humbly asks Moreno Valley to stand with José’s.

With gratitude,
The José’s Mexican Food Family
Serving the Inland Empire Since 1989

Nuestra Historia
